Tips for Meeting with Academic Advisors & Developing Your Career

Academic Advising

Students should be encouraged to meet with their academic advisor during their first term at the University of Oregon. As such, they should be aware of the various resources available to them as they get used to the academic culture at the University of Oregon. Student Resources are available through the Office of Academic Advising that students should access as they learn to navigate the university. They may also want to refer to the Advising Syllabus which helps them plan for advising appointments. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisors from weeks 5-7, if not before.

General tips for advising appointments include the following:

  • Take notes and make a plan during your advising appointment.
  • Bring a current copy of your degree audit to review with your advisor.
  • Bring a list of questions or topics you would like to discuss during your appointment. Possible questions for discussion are listed below:
    • Career and internship possibilities within major of study.
    • Advisors’ personal career path and learning.
    • Challenges in program of study and how to navigate them.

Career Support

During their first year at the University of Oregon, students can take many steps to be proactive in their journey towards building a career. The UO Career Center has some great International Student Resources that students should be encouraged to access early. Some of the key steps the Career Center suggests taking are noted below.

  • Create a DuckConnect account.
  • Connect with a Career Advisor – International Students should meet with Bart Kassel.
  • Take CAS 407: Career and Academic Major Decisions.
  • Develop or refine your resume.
