Photo upwards from the courtyard of the Axel Towers
When most people think of a metal building, they usually consider a metal box, a skyscraper, a corporate prison of monotony. But I think the technological advancements have gone beyond that. When I studied in Copenhagen, I would always pass these two towers on my way to class, the Axel Towers. These towers we constructed of metal with a beautiful, dynamic and organic facade that made the building alive and stand out more than the others around. I think this photo beautifully captures that even though we can simple metal structures, the form of the building doesn’t have to be so monotonous and bland, but rather we can play with more shapes and forms than what we are used to. Metal buildings should start to evolve to this extent that we can be dynamic and playful with our buildings.
I love that you thought of something outside of the box than what everyone else has. The way you described the facade is very interesting but I would agree that is does make the building seem alive and it definitely stands out. As we talked about in class, metal structure allowed for facades to be more interesting and allow for more windows and I think this example of the Axel Towers definitely reflected that. The form of it also plays a huge factor and gives the building more dimension.
I have been thinking about the iron skeleton a lot since we talked about it in class, and now every building I look at I think about and see if its structure is covered by architecture. From what I see on the outside of this one, there are metal columns but also a lot of wood which might be covering up a little bit. I think a mixture between the two makes for a pretty interesting building.
