This symposium intends to investigate the place of animals in design. Increasingly we are recognizing that our built and natural environments are shaped and inhabited by many “others,” only some of whom are human. Participatory, inclusionary, and community-based design and research practices are opening up to the voices and experiences of multiple publics, and new collaborative relationships are emerging which include the more-than human
participant as client, co-citizen, and companion.

We welcome papers and projects that address design from the animal’s perspective, and examine an array of speculative and pragmatic approaches to including animals within design, planning, and research.

Questions:

Can we co-create urban environments with animals? If so, how, when, and where would we do that?

What do we need to know to be able do that?

What is the state of knowledge at the intersection of animals as ecosystem engineers and urban ecological design?

What is the potential in landscape architecture to co-design our communities with our more-than-human neighbors?
