Food Photos Posted Online Data Visualization
Goal: Track something related to your life for at least one week. Make a graphic about it.
The data that was visualized was the food photographs I have posted on my daily blog, hlg365.tumblr.com, from January 1, 2014 to May 22, 2012. In total there were 140 photographs with 47 of them having food as the main subject. Therefore, food photographs made up 34% of the photographs posted. This data is shown in the outer rim of the plate through the black shaded section. The percentage was also put on the lower right curve of the plate, allowing viewers to quantify the percentage.
The plate filled with food represents the different types of food that are featured in the food photographs on the blog and acts as a pie chart. The amounts of food on the plate corresponds with the percentage of photographs out of the total number of food photographs posted.
The percentages of types of food highlighted on hlg365.tumblr.com photo posts areĀ compared to the percentages of type of food photographs posted on Flickr from August 2012 to January 2011 in a study by 360i (http://mashable.com/2011/05/09/foodtography-infographic/). The percentages are labeled next to they type of food and were imputed as a bar graph. To complete the theme of a place setting at a table, the bar graph was then filled in with a more transparent shade of the same colors used in the bar graph to complete the rectangular napkin.
In the process of collecting data, I found that my food photographs often depicted more than one type of food category. In these photographs, I categorized them by the most prominent category featured in the photograph. For every ice cream photograph, I categorized it as a dairy product instead of the dessert, which was cookies, pie, and cupcakes. Items in the other category include sandwiches that include almost every category, pizza, and breakfast food.
