Artifact #7 Technology

Technology

The Objectives for my seventh artifact are:

  • Learn about the history of computer graphics
  • Examine the role of technology as a force for cultural maintenance and change
  • Discuss the validity of art created with the aid of machines

Reflection:

Completing the assignments on technology really made me see the significance that technology has our on culture.  By learning about the history of computer graphics, I not only learned something new about the graphics themselves, but I learned something new about our culture and how our culture changes.  In Beverly J. Jones’ article “Computer Graphics: Effects of Origins” she uses computer graphics to explain that, “cultural patterns do not die” (pg. 21 Jones).  It was interesting to me to see how something relatively new such as computer graphics was used to explain how cultural patterns do not die.  This reading really made me see how technology has become such a big part of our culture, and how changes in our culture now incorporate changes in technology.  In order for our culture to advance, it is almost a necessity that technology act as a leading force for cultural maintenance and change.

This assignment also made me see how new forms of art are being created with machines.  Before computers were invented it was not possible for art to be created in the way it is sometimes created now.  I was able to see how new forms of art have developed from technology.  I was also able to start to see how dependent our culture has become on technology.  This really made me take a moment to notice how much I personally depend on technology.  I find myself with my phone always near me, or on the computer or watching t.v. for hours a day.  This has become a part of my every day life and is something that I do not see changing at any point in the future.  This week really made me see how much of a force technology has on almost every person’s life in our culture.

Future Goals:

In the future I want to try to to cautious with how dependent I get on technology.  I was to keep updated on the new and upcoming technological advances that our culture faces, but I also want to be weary of how much I get into it.  Although I think it is important to be comfortable with technology, I do not want to lose out on the natural parts of the world as well.
