Food As Art
The objectives of my third artifact are:
- Examine methods for evaluating qualities of art, such as product versus process, the difference between craft and fine art, must art be archival, and what is an aesthetic reaction
- Explore the notion of food as an art-form
- Consider cultural differences in the production and consumption of food
Reflection:
When I first began the reading and assignment for this artifact I automatically just thought that yes food was definitely an art. I had always considered cooking to be an art form and therefore food to be the art that is created. While doing the reading though and doing the research part of this assignment, I began to see how this could be a two sided argument and see how others might not consider food to be art. I started to see the side of the argument that states that food does not represent any deeper meaning, much like other forms of art often do. Or how food is only temporary and is gone once it is eaten. Even though I believe that these may be valid arguments, at the end of this assignment I still believed that food was an art food.
While reading Elizabeth Telfer’s article “Food As Art” I came to a realization that food is art, it just needs to be looked at in a different way than a lot of the more common forms of art. There are a lot of differences in food, such as how it is evaluated. No other art form uses the senses of smell and taste. Although this is unique I do not think that it disqualifies food as a form of art. Telfer says that, ” We also need to find a middle way between two unsatisfactory attitudes to the aesthetic dimension of food” (pg. 25). This statement made me think that even though people do not think that food aesthetically fits into being “art” if they are able to look at food in a different way they may be able to overcome this. I also began thinking about how not all food is considered art. I think that there is definitely a difference between a quick hamburger at a drive through and fine dining, and if people can distinguish between the two then it can become even more clear that food is art.
Future Goals:
I’ve always loved to cook but I’ve never been able to cook very extravagant things. I’ve also never thought of myself as a good artist. My goal for the future is to advance my culinary skills and be able to create a piece of food that can be considered art.
