This article was about incorporating design and industrial goods—specifically, Peter Behrens’s influence on AEG. Behren designed aesthetically pleasing stores with beautiful lighting and fine materials to help promote customers to buy their products. This reading goes into detail about the products and layout of the stores and gives information about what products were sold and were not sold. With the products that were not sold, Behren would propose a different design that would cost the company but would guarantee the product would start to sell. Bourgeois folks are likelier to go into a store with a good aesthetic. There is a psychological aspect of people being attracted to things similar to their style and societal class standards. Behren understood that and helped the AEG create these successful stores with the help of his skills.
This reminds me of a lot of coffee shops today. Coffee shops are mostly popular for their design. People like to study in places that are comfortable and pleasing to the eye. A Tailored Coffee shop is like this. People go here for aesthetic design. The decor is very trendy and keeps a clean look. The greenery that is placed around the interior adds a certain aesthetic that people in their twenties are attracted to. The mural on the wall of R&B artists and the popular R&B music played throughout the day. They place records behind the counter. Having records is another aesthetic that people that are currently in their twenties love, and not only are they just record they are very well-liked records. The coffee here is great, but even if it were not great it would still be hard to find a seat. People like to be surrounded by the aesthetics that they like. The design of Tailored is all around liked and keeps people coming back. Behren did a similar thing with the AEG stores, but he designed objects to be more attractive.

This article showcased the innovation that Elsie de Wolfe displayed. She displayed the desires women wanted in their homes, which involved beauty and elegance. Wolfe worked with a lot of upper-class women. She wanted to show that women could also do great in their profession. In this case, it is interior decoration. Wolfe changed the tradition and believed women should be actively pursuing careers in interior decorating because it was away from them to show the taste of their homes, which was very important at this time. Wolde was an incredible activist and was involved in the women’s suffrage movement and wanted to change the way society saw women. She wanted to leave an impact and stand up for women. This article tells the reader that not only was she a great interior decorator that was personal and stylish, but she was being looked up to by other women for what she was doing in society. The design world is predominantly male run and she was interacting with the industry and was good at what she did. Which made the men look at her in a way that should’ve been normalized. Wolfe created a play that helped other women to join the design world.
Meraki Coffee Co. display’s a very cozy quarter. De Wolfe focused on functionality and beauty, which Meraki Coffee Co. expresses completely. The coffee shop has comfortable sitting areas that involve some tables and chairs and a couch here and there. The lighting of the space is great. It is very white inside, so when the sun is out in Eugene it is very bright, but when it’s not sunny there are displays of warm lighting in corners that create a cozy feel. The colors of the couches are neutral and a splash of blue. This is a very calming feeling. De Wolfe talked about the attention to detail and in Meraki Coffee, the lighting and the setup of the coffee shop work well. The coffee shop is separated into two parts, through the front door you are directly shown the counter where you order and then are able to swing to the left and find a desired seat. This movement does not allow the visitor to think, which is perfect. A well-thought-out space should allow the visitor to not think about where they are going. Meraki Coffee Co plays very well with De Wolfe’s desire to create functional, beautiful spaces.

This is a corner in Meraki at night. It encapsulates the lighting and coziness of the space.

Tailored Coffee Shop is a versatile space that caters to students and community members alike, providing a cozy environment for conversations or productivity. Conveniently located on 13th avenue, one can easily pop in for a quick cup of coffee while continuing their journey. The building is part of a single-story complex adjacent to a parking garage, featuring an open-plan layout with limited seating arranged in a circular flow. The seating arrangement is carefully thought out, with a circular flow movement that encourages a natural flow of conversation and movement. There are a few different seating options available, including cozy armchairs and sofas, high tables with stools, and standard tables and chairs. The lighting is soft and warm, with a mixture of natural light from large windows and warm, muted artificial light that creates a cozy atmosphere. The space also features a few carefully chosen pieces of artwork, often featuring rap music from recent decades, which add a unique and interesting touch to the decor. The minimalist design of the cafe highlights the exposed brick and clean white walls, with a few carefully chosen art pieces on display – often featuring rap music from recent decades.
