2016-17 Latin America Recruitment & Outreach Meetings

Interested faculty and staff representing Latin American Studies, CLLAS, AEI, Enrollment Management, OIA, Grad School and others have been working on ways to increase undergraduate and graduate recruitment from Latin America; boost connections to AEI intensive English and online education platforms; build stronger institutional linkages to the region; access US, Latin American government and other scholarships to support student and faculty mobility to/from the region and explore fundraising and other outreach to support UO linkages to Latin America.

Grad Recruitment From Brazil
Two federal government agencies are the main sponsors of study abroad for Brazilians

Capes (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior) is an agency of the Ministry of Education in charge of improving higher education in Brazil. CAPES sponsors about 2800 scholarships for Brazilian professors, researchers, and students to study and/or research abroad in all subjects.

CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico) is an agency of the Ministry of Science and technology in charge of developing STEM professionals. CNPq sponsors programs similar to CAPES’ portfolio, but limited to STEM fields. CNPq also sponsors the science without Borders programs (suspended).

CAPES Scholarships
All scholarships include a monthly stipend, transportation, moving allowance, and health insurance.

Full PhD abroad – 200-400 per year
Duration: 12 to 48 months
Expected call for proposals: October 2017

Partial PhD abroad (PDSE) – About 2,000 scholarships per year
Duration: 4-12 months

Post-PhD abroad – Around 400 scholarships per year
Duration: 6-18 months

Internships – About 200 per year
Duration: up to 12 months

Science Without Borders – CNPq
First cycle focused on undergraduate studies. Program is suspended and is expected to return with focus on graduate studies.

FAPESP

Similar to CAPES and CNPq, but funded by the State of Sao Paulo. Uses shorter timelines and announces grants on a rolling basis. Funds scholarships for study and research in all levels.

Fundacao Estudar
Partners with Education USA. Fundacao Estudar offers scholarships and resources on study abroad. A free e-book helps students prepare for study abroad programs and apply for scholarships.

Universities
Fundacao Estudar publishes reports on universities that are good fit for Brazilian students.

Lemann Foundation
Sponsors scholarships and research on public policy, public health, and education. Good fit for PPPM and CoE projects in partnership with Brazilian institutions.

Unb – University of Brasilia.
Established on April 21, 1962, the University of Brasilia (UnB) is the utopia of Brazilian anthropologist and educator Darcy Ribeiro. Since its inception, the University has been committed to producing state of the art knowledge and promoting citizenship for the transformation of Brazil, giving it a national reputation for excellence in research, teaching, and extension.

Currently, UnB has approximately 2,308 teachers, 2,692 dedicated staff, 30,727 undergraduates and 8,913 graduate students. The University houses 26 faculties and schools and has 18 centers dedicated to specialized research on four campuses: the Darcy Ribeiro Campus (main campus) and three other sites (Ceilândia, Gama and Planaltina)

UFLA – Federal University of Lavras
UFLA is a mid-size university with strong focus on sustainability studies. UFLA ranked 38 in the Green Metric 2016 university sustainability ranking. Dual PhD programs are currently offered in Biodiversity and are taught jointly by UFLA and Lancaster Environment Centre academic staff. The university offers on-campus housing for foreign students.

BRASA – Brazilian Student Association.
Growing network of Brazilians students, alumni, and prospective students. BRASA organizes several events per year at US universities and promote US programs for Brazilian students.

BRASA – Brazilian Studies Association.
BRASA is an international, interdisciplinary group of scholars who support and promote Brazilian studies in all fields, especially in the humanities and social sciences. BRASA is dedicated to the promotion of Brazilian studies around the world in general, and in the United States in particular.

LASPAU
LASPAU operates CsF, OEA, and Fulbright placements for Brazilian students in the US.
