Recommendation Request Guide

How to Request Letters of Recommendation for GlobalWorks

    1. At least three weeks in advance of the application deadline, think about all your recent professors and work supervisors, and pick two of them. Your best letters of recommendation will come from people who 1) know you well and support your goals, and 2) are good writers and/or well-known in their field. Ask politely if they are willing to recommend you.
      • One letter should be written by a professor. Think about classes you did well in, professors that you spoke to outside of class, and professors who teach something related to your desired internship area. If none of your professors know you well, help them get to know you. Visit their office hours or talk to them after class, and tell them about your experience and your goals.
      • The other letter should be written by a work supervisor. This person will comment on your timeliness, professionalism, respectfulness, trustworthiness, and so on—so pick someone who supervised work you did well.
    2. Soon after they have agreed to recommend you, send them email. Use the email to show your best professional, respectful writing ability. Include the following information.
      • Provide a copy of your resume and share any other information about yourself that you would like included in the letter. Make sure the recommender knows about your internship goals.
      • The letter should be on official letterhead if possible.
      • The letter should be addressed “To whom it may concern.” This is a general letter for all your prospective internship supervisors, not for GlobalWorks staff, so it should not mention GlobalWorks.
      • The letter should be emailed to globalworks@uoregon.edu. Your recommender will not receive an email prompt or link to an online system. They can email the letter to us any time before the deadline.
      • Make sure your recommender knows the deadline, and don’t hesitate to send reminders!
