INTERNSHIPS IN
Singapore
If you’re expecting the “Crazy Rich Asians” version of Singapore, you probably don’t have the full picture. Most of Singapore’s population doesn’t live a life of the rich and famous, which means the city is accessible and exciting for all types of visitors as well. Singapore is a city of perhaps the best street food in the world and has one of the most advanced public transportation systems that makes exploring its diverse neighborhoods a breeze.
Only in the past couple decades has Singapore evolved from an industrial fishing village to a financial hub filled with shiny high-rises. While Singapore is one of the most expensive cities in the world, there are also free parks, concerts, health clinics, and other services to provide its citizens and frugal travelers with a high standard of living.
Internship Duties & Sectors
Internship assignments vary and are highly customizable. Explore the dropdowns below to learn more about the unique characteristics this location has to offer for internships in each sector.
Art + Design
Singapore has one of the most distinct skylines of any city, with one-of-a-kind designs found around every corner. It’s also an artisitc city with plenty of museums, art galleries, theaters, and public art. Urban designers and landscape architects can learn a lot from this small yet innovative island nation.
Business + Accounting
As one of the largest financial centers in the world, Singapore provides endless opportunities for students to learn from the best. Whether your concentration is in entrepreneurship, finance, OBA, or marketing you will be sure to find an internship that meets your interests and career goals.
Data Science
Data Science is a field of ever-growing importance across industries. The need for workers in this field is growing exponentially, and students will be able to work at any number of businesses and organizations that will need research and analytical work performed.
Education + Teaching English
Singapore’s education system is vastly different from what students might be used to in the U.S., yet it consistently ranks as one of the best in the world. Education interns have the opportunity to learn a very scripted and curriculum-based pedagogical style focused largely on examination preparation in a variety of settings, from public institutions to international schools.
Environment + Sustainability
Known as the ‘Garden City,’ Singapore is an innovative city that seeks to build sustainability. It’s famous ‘Supertrees’ as seen in the photo above, are vertical gardens, and collect solar energy, in addition to being visually dazzling and an iconic national symbol. During the 2018 World Economic Forum, Singapore was ranked the most sustainable city in Asia and fourth in the world. Interns will be able to contribute to this field and will likely work for organizations with goals of sustainability, conservation, and the protection of biodiversity.
Journalism + Communications
The media in Singapore is highly developed and tightly controlled by the ruling government party. In a place where self-censorship is commonplace, interns have a rare opportunity to hone their skills in a completely different environment that can at times be challenging and at other times be highly rewarding.
Social Sciences
Since becoming a fully independent country from British control in 1965, Singapore has undergone rapid and significant shifts in development, politics, economic growth, and social policy. Students benefit from a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to intern is a country vastly different from their own.
STEM + Healthcare
Singapore uses a novel healthcare model by which the medical care itself is subsidized by the government. For many societal and political reasons, Singaporeans also have very good health outcomes. From a tech point of view, Singapore is touted as becoming the next Silicon Valley of Asia, with 80 out of the top 100 tech companies in the world having a presence there. Singapore’s population is also remarkably tech-savvy, making it a fascinating place for STEM student to intern.
*Please note that not all STEM and Healthcare-related internship placements earn 12 credits or last for 8 weeks.
NGO + Nonprofits
Singapore’s nonprofit sector is relatively new, having faced cultural and financial barriers to achieve their goals. The industry has worked hard to change the individual mindset to one of giving (both time and money) in order to fill in the gaps in social services. Bridging the gap between nonprofit and for-profit will be an interesting relationship for student interns to explore.
