Welcome to Global Service

Welcome to Global Service, a program of the Department of Global Studies. In the Global Service program, students can minor in Global Service, obtain a Peace Corps Prep Certificate, or both!

Why Global Service and Peace Corps Prep?

The Global Service minor and the Peace Corps Prep program both guide you in adding a global, intercultural, service dimension to any major, while encouraging you to reflect on your place in the wider world and your own responsibilities as a global citizen.

The requirements for the Global Service minor and the Peace Corps Prep Certificate are identical, and fulfilling requirements for one automatically fulfills requirements for the other. The application process is likewise identical for both, and students may choose to apply for one or both programs simultaneously.

The Global Service minor is a UO degree that, upon completion, will appear on your University of Oregon transcript.

Peace Corps Prep is a certificate program for undergraduates that centers on one empowering question: How can you prepare yourself to be the best Peace Corps Volunteer you can be? It is a certificate awarded by the U.S. Peace Corps, and does not appear on your UO transcript.

What will getting a minor in Global Service or a Peace Corps Prep certificate offer you?

The Global Service minor and the Peace Corps Prep certificate both allow students to concentrate in one of six sectors – Agriculture, Community Economic Development, Education, Environment, Health, and Youth in Development. Students take 24 credits of coursework, of which 12 must be upper division. Students also complete and report on at least 50 hours practical experience, as well as professional and leadership development experiences. Students focusing on Latin American and West Africa also have a language requirement.
