The United Kingdom, EU and the current Immigration system, 2015

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Citizens of European Union countries have ‘free movement’ rights within the EU giving them the right to live and work in the UK. Non-EU citizens have to meet criteria set out by the UK government in order to enter, work, study or settle in the UK. Net migration to the UK is currently over 300,000.

This post published on Migration Watch UK an independent and non-political think tank founded in 2008 by Lord Green of Deddington, a former UK Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Outlines the current system used by migrants to travel between countries in the European Union. As well as the United Kingdom’s current position within the EU. This article gives historians a clear view of the current EU migration policies, as well as the ability to conduct research on the statistics of immigration and emigration by monitoring the developments in the system as they occurred. These developments depending on the outcome of the negotiations with the EU could dictate whether or not the UK remains in the EU.

The article lays out the current immigration system employed by the EU and UK. Showing the differences between migrants from other EU countries who have the right to live and work in the UK as European Citizens. Or migrants from outside the EU who are subject to immigration control and require a visa. It also covers the policies governing work immigration, students, family immigration, and those seeking asylum.

This article was written for the purpose of making the United Kingdom’s immigration policies as a member of the EU available in a clean and concise manner to the public. It as far as I could tell was laid out in a manner that was simply relaying information and did not contain a bias that I could detect. It is targeted at ordinary British citizens who are curious about the current system. As well as at people who wished to migrate to the UK, laying out the different methods and how the possible new policies could influence them.
