—India’s BJP Targets Illegal Immigration by Al Jazeera English
People have been immigrating into India from Bangladesh illegally for many years, however, more recently it has become a bigger issue because of the rapid increase of illegal immigrants that are coming into India because of political and economic issues.
This video shows two sides of the issue, one of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was running for election representing the Bharatiya Janata Party and the other of the illegal immigrants who have been living in India for a longtime.
The illegal immigrants have many arguments as to why they should be able to stay in India, first being the problems that they are trying to stay away from back home. In Bangladesh there are no jobs available to work in, India is able to provide them with work even if it low-ranking jobs and they will make little money. Another argument is the inability of India’s Government to differentiate people native of Bangladesh and people native to India. Both look the same and speak the same language. Some Bangladeshi immigrants have even created fake documents to represent themselves as Indian and nobody is able to tell the difference. In addition, many of the Bangladeshi immigrants have been living in India for decades, they question as to why now they are going to kick them out especially after they have finally been able to create a stable home.
On Prime Minister Modi’s side, he states that he will be kicking out all illegal immigrants, especially those from Bangladesh when he comes into power. He had stated that people previously in power have been making it easy and welcoming to the immigrants who were coming over from Bangladesh and he wanted this to change. However, because of Modi’s strong Hindu beliefs he believes all Bangladeshi immigrants who share this belief should be able to stay.
The purpose of this video was to show the way the elections and the Prime Minister was treating the immigrants of Bangladesh compared to how the immigrants of Bangladesh think they should be treated. The biasness of this video is towards the Bangladeshi people, and showing how harsh the Indian Government can and will be on illegal immigrants, even those who have been living there for decades.
