Program Description

To earn a master’s of science in geography in this hybrid program, K-12 teachers start the program during the first four-week summer term on campus at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. During this four-week session, teachers take 16 graduate level credits in theory, geography content, geography methods, and develop a terminal  research project proposal.

During the following academic year, teachers take online distance geography classes, focused reading,  and begin implementing their  research.  Typically, teachers take 13 credits over these three terms during the academic year.

The next summer, teachers return to the University of Oregon campus during the first four-week summer session to complete 16 graduate credits, finalize and present their research project.

Transfer Credits

Participants may apply to to the University of Oregon Graduate School to transfer up to 15 graduate credits – related to geography education – from an accredited instruction, provided the credits have not been applied to another graduate degree. University of Oregon graduate credit transfer link.

All requirements for the master’s degree must be completed within a seven-year time period. The beginning date of the seven-year time period will be adjusted to an earlier date to include any graduate credits, approved for transfer into the program, that were taken before the date of admission.  For example: a master’s student admitted for Fall 2002 who has approved transfer credits taken at a previous university in Fall 2000 will have a completion deadline of Summer 2007.
