UO Geography Education Master’s Degree

A Master’s Of Science  Degree in Geography for K-12 Educators
Now, more than ever, geography education matters

EDGE  is a convenient and rewarding low-residency program that offers teachers the opportunity to work toward a master’s degree without being absent from their current teaching positions. This Master’s program is offered during two four-week summer terms on campus at the University of  Oregon in Eugene, Oregon and three terms of online course work during the academic year.

In this Geography Master’s Program, EDGE teachers will:

  • Expand their knowledge and understanding of geography content and pedagogy.
  • Learn how to include geographic thinking in the classroom to solve real-world problems.
  • Think critically about environmental, socioeconomic, and cultural information from a spatial perspective.
  • Research important issues in geographic education that can enhance their teaching.
  • Develop grant writing and research skills.

These graduate-level geography education classes are also open to teachers who want to update their teaching credentials and earn professional development units.

For more than sixty years, the Department of Geography at the University of Oregon has offered a master’s degree in geography specifically for K-12 teachers. The  EDGE program has helped in-service teachers gain the expertise and confidence to  provide high-quality cutting-edge geography instruction.

Changing political boundaries, territorial conflicts, sustainability, and globalization are examples of geographic issues that confront us daily. These issues illustrate the importance of studying geography. Current geography teaching standards and methods help students understand their rapidly changing world while grounding them in the local geography of their  hometown, region, and state.
