Pressing Issue: Violence and Migration
In the most populous city in Haiti, Port Au Prince, as of August 2022, a reported 96,000 individuals have had to leave due to rising gang violence and unrest rates. Because of issues such as inter-gang violence, political unrest, human rights issues, gender-based violence, and lack of safety, for many individuals, fleeing Haiti is their best option. When these people begin to seek refuge in other countries, they are turned away a lot of the time. “Dominican Ministry of Defense reported more than 178,000 Haitians forcibly repatriated” (HMR,2021). Places like the Dominican Republic, which shares a border with Haiti, are turning away Haitians looking to leave. As well as the US, the “Biden administration expelled approximately 12,000 Haitians, a dramatic increase from 2020 when 895 Haitians were expelled from the country.”
