Given Cambodia’s long history of political unrest and government, change has given its culture a rich history, but on the contrary, its history as an independent country does not compare to the length of others. As a lot of countries are, Cambodia is slowly shifting from French as its second language to English. This is a practical demonstration of Cambodia’s its progression as a country as it leaves its French history in the past.
Location-wise, Cambodia is home to many different species of life, especially in its tropical forests. Unfortunately, deforestation is horribly ruining the vast amounts of life within these forests. A large reason for the mass deforestation is the fact that Cambodia is still largely developing as a country. And while people have become more conscious about the rate at which they cut down the forest, it continues to threaten wildlife that lives in the forests. Concerns about this issue are becoming increasingly prevalent and plan to reduce the number of trees cut down.
There is another aspect of Cambodia’s biodiversity that is also potentially threatened is its fish supply. Plans for dams being built upriver in the Greater Mekong Region could cause the fish numbers to dwindle. These fish is very important to many people’s livelihood, not only as a way of income but as a way for people to obtain protein. Another aspect of this problem is the fact that a number of these dams are being built by another country entirely, Laos. Cambodia must negotiate with the Laos groups or companies that are intending to build the dams.
