What is Nationalism?
Nationalism is the Ideology of supremacy of your nation. This effect is almost brain washing of the people to believe that your nation can do no wrong and it’s supporters are completely devoted. This can lead to xenophobia and interest in totalitarianism.
Nationalism in INdonesia
In comparison to American nationalism, Indonesian citizens aren’t very nationalistic. In 2017 there was an instance of ultra nationalism in Indonesia. During July of this year the gouvernaient had banned an Islamist organization named Hizb ut-Tahrir (HTI). After this the government passed a law that gave the government the power to disband community organization that are thought to be against Pancasila, the country’s state ideology. This angered many Indonesian citizen and protests were held.
Nationalism compared to Patriotism
It can be very hard to understand the difference between nationalism and patriotism, and when to use them. Patriotism is love support and devotion toward one’s country. A sense of loyalty and community form your nation can be feelings of patriotism. Nationalism in comparison is a more extreme, agressive and excessive patriotism. It turns the idea of community into feelings of supremacy. This can lead to something more along the lines of isolationist and exclusionary to the rest of the world.
