To understand the ways in which the global conflict of Russia invading Ukraine is impacting Myanmar, first you must understand some of the recent history. The Myanmar military which has seized power is one of the major players in Myanmar’s government, while the National Unity Government is working to return power back to the people and out of the hands of the military. These two parties have opposing opinions on the Russian invasion, with the military government supporting Russia’s attacks, as Russia was one of the few countries that supported the Myanmar military after the coup which secured their power. The opposing party strongly opposes Russia’s invasion, aligning themselves with the UN. One of the ways this invasion has directly impacted Myanmar is that the lessening of Russia’s support due to their distractions in the Ukraine has led to Myanmar’s military government turning to Russia for support.
