Alexa Peterson, Senior Right Fielder

Alexa Peterson is a Salem, Oregon native. She committed to the University of Oregon Softball team her sophomore year of high school. She has played both catcher and right field during her time at Oregon. She is apart of the most winning class in Oregon history.

When did you start playing softball?

“I started playing softball when I was five.”

What growth have you seen from your freshman year to now?

“Over the last four years we have progressed with our team chemistry. I think that has been a big factor in our success. We have some of the best coaching staff in the nation…they have taught us the best way to play the game…each year we have progressively gotten better. Last year with losing in super regionals instead of getting down on ourselves we have taken that and used it to fuel our fire. It has made us work harder in the off-season and come out harder this year.”

Can you talk about the team philosophy of pitch by pitch, game by game?

“Our coaches have this philosophy of pitch by pitch game by game, not getting ahead of ourselves and that is something we didn’t do as well last year. We won the Pac-12 Title and we sat back and were excited that we achieved that, but we needed to make sure that we stayed in the moment…that we are just taking it one pitch at a time and focusing on staying in that moment.”

What can you say about your leadership, success and versatility over the past four years?

“My first two years I mainly caught, Junior year I did a little bit of catching, and this year I’m playing outfield for the first time. That transition has been difficult because I’ve never played that position before but it has become another love for me. Catching is my first love but I also love being in the outfield. It’s a lot easier on my body and I can take breaks between each pitch where as with catching my mind is going a million miles an hour. Leadership wise something that the other seniors and I have tried to instill is to be good leaders for our team on and off the field.”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

“My goal is to win a National Championship and that’s something I have dreamt about my whole life. We are one step closer and I think that we have the pitching, defense, and offense to do it. The cool thing is I don’t even think we’ve played our best game yet.”
