Welcome to Essentials of Speech and Comprehensibility session!

This session will show participants how to use ANVILL voiceboard, WASP. and PRAAT to as part of pronunciation instruction/activities.  These activities are designed to create opportunities for students to focus on pronunciation and inter- and intra- class connections and for instructors to provide individual feedback.

Your experience

Task 1: Please share your experiences with pronunciation instruction by posting them on a shared Google Doc

ANVILL voiceboard

ANVILL’s voiceboard allows students to leave video messages, and it is a great tool for teaching/practicing pronunciation.  I have found that most students work very hard to record their best performance.  Peer pressure (their classmates might see their videos, right?) seems to have an excellent effect here!  They also actually enjoy recording tasks 😉

Task 2: Let’s go to our ANVILL page

  • Graduate students assistants and I have left some samples on the page.  Please have a look.
  • When it is time, we will record your activities!
  • Here is a brief ANVILL instruction.

WASP

WASP (though not a great name!) allows students to SEE their pronunciation and HEAR how they sound online.  It’s important that we create opportunities where students pay attention to their own pronunciation, and think about how they could improve it.

Task 3: Let’s LOOK at your pronunciation on WASP.  Go to this page, click “Record” and begin!

PRAAT

PRAAT also allows students to SEE their pronunciation, and HEAR how they sound, too.  If you provide model sounds, they can compare their pronunciation to a model.

Task 4: Let’s learn a few basic functions of PRAAT (Click here to jump to PRAAT tutorial page)

Web resources

There are probably a ton of web resources aimed for pronunciation practice and instruction.  There are always news ones popping up!  It’s a good idea to occasionally explore what is available.

Task 5: Let’s take a look at 1 or 2 examples, and search the web to look for useful resources for your language! Please go to this page.
