Download and Install
Start Praat
1. Double click the icon.
2. It should open two windows, Praat Objects and Praat Picture. You can close the Praat Picture window. 
Recording on Praat
1. Go to “New” in the top menu
2. Select “Record mono sound…”
3. Check “Mono” is selected under “Channels”
4. Select “44100 Hz” for sampling frequency
(sorry the arrow in the image points to 22050 Hz, but please ignore that!)
5. Name the sound
- Let’s record you saying “pronunciation” in your language.
- If you can, try saying it twice, one in good pronunciation and one in poor pronunciation
7. “Stop”
8. “Save to list”
- Now you see “1.Sound(Title)” in the Objects window
Opening and viewing sound files
9. Select the recorded sound “title” 
10. Click “View & Edit” in the menu list
- Now you should be able to SEE the sound!
- On the Sound Window, there are a lot of markings, but you can get rid of them!
11. Go to “Pulses” and uncheck “Show pulses”
12. Similarly, go to “Formant” and uncheck “Show formants”
13. And go to “Intensity” and uncheck “Show intensity”
- Now we can compare the pitch pattern of two pronunciations.
- Here are a good pronunciation (left) and one with a typical error in the production of “Nihongo (Japanese)”
Listening to sounds
14. Select the sound file name in the Object window and “View & Edit”
15. Click the bottom bar to listen to the whole sound 
16. Select a portion of the sound you want to listen to
- This should turn the background of the portion pink
17. Click the now partitioned segment in the top bar or the bottom bar
Saving sound files
18. Select the sound in Praat Object window
19. Click “Save” in the top menu
20. Select “Save as WAV file”
- This should open a familiar windows save file window
