Each student develops a design proposal of a for-profit restaurant that addresses socially conscious business practice aka corporate social responsibility.  There are four design programs, and each program is developed by a team of four students. The site, approximately 5000-6,000 sf, is located on the corner of NW Couch and NW 1st Ave in the Blagen Block next to the UO Portland campus in White Stag Block.

The nature of knowledge has shifted with the introduction of digital media, globalization, and a more fluid public realm. Through a series of experiments sited in and responding to particular communities across the Portland Metropolitan area, this studio defines the future library.

The studio, ‘Fluid States’, engages the themes of culture, migration, landscape, and water. The studio partners with a Non-Profit to propose design solutions that solve for lack of community space and identity for Pacific Islanders now living in the Pacific NW.

“Visualizing Health Equity” contributes visions for an equitable future, where everyone in the Portland Jade District has the opportunity to lead a healthier life. With Jade District community environmental justice frameworks as a starting point, the studio explores connections between the built environment and racial and socio-economic health inequities, examining the full role that architecture and urban design can play in reducing those inequities. Students are synthesizing lessons from a community advocate from the Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon, a healthy buildings expert, and spatial justice theorists, and have developed proposals centered on affordable housing and community spaces.

ARCH 486I586 // Crossing the Border……………………………………………………………….2pm – 6pm

On one hand, boundaries and walls— transitions between inside and outside—are essential to architecture. But “inside” and “outside” may also imply “insiders” and “outsiders”—categories of social, economic and environmental exclusion. In this terminal/thesis studio we will investigate these ideas using an architectural project to show how a divisive or problematic border may turn into one of helpful overlaps and interchange.

GIGA Studio looks at how remote work will affect the way architects design housing and office buildings. Students were asked to envision an ecosystem comprised of headquarter buildings for remote companies, housing for remote workers and the “hubs” that connect the two. It’s been an amazing experience to see what seemed to be a theoretical exercise last September turn into a reality in the past months. Having spent the last term studying remotely, students were able to learn about the challenges and opportunities behind remote work first hand.

The Springfield Public Library will be the latest in remaking the civic heart of Springfield Oregon. The building design will reflect the current and future visions of the people of Springfield. It will be both more visible and more accessible. It’s forms and materials will reflect its place and promise to endure for future generations. The designs will explore various sites for the library that will continue to be part of the downtown heart of Springfield.
