Our morning started with the hike around Lagazuoi, a striking peak in the Dolomites. The journey was filled with breathtaking vistas. The geological history of these dramatic rock formations takes us back to when these mountains were coral reefs beneath an ancient sea. Learning about the transformation of these rocks over millions of years was humbling. This place was significant for me because while conquering the 9-mile hike, the views were something I had never seen before.
As we climbed steep slopes with the help of modern safety equipment, I couldn’t help but wonder how the soldiers of World War I navigated these treacherous paths without the aid of today’s technology. It’s a testament to their strength and determination, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in these mountains.
Upon reaching the Lagazuoi tunnels and trenches, the gravity of history bore down on us. These once-quiet hollows in the mountain had transformed into a battleground for soldiers from different nations. Standing there, I couldn’t help but reflect on the lives that were forever changed and the sacrifices made in the name of a cause larger than oneself.
