About the Illinois River

The Illinois River, a contributory of the Rogue River located in southern Oregon, was accepted into the Oregon State Scenic Waterways System in 1970 and the Federal Wild and Scenic River system in 1977. This 50.4 mile long river provides a magnitude of activities from a plethora of opportunities for day-use as the emerald green water of the Illinois River provides a cool break from the hot summer temperatures, as well as overnight float trips where expert boating skills and rubber watercraft are needed. The river houses over 150 rapids; 11 of which are Class IV and one of which has a most difficult rating of Class V making it one of the most difficult sections of wild river in the country. However, no matter what recreational activity you are partaking in, the river’s outstanding scenery, fishing, botany, water quality, camping and hiking trails provide something for everyone!

Although a lovely place, it’s also become more and more inaccessible over the years as its popularity has grown. Some disclaimers: The river can only be reach by a single one lane road. People have to park on the side of the road with very limited areas to do so safely.

Two of my favorite spots along the river include Store Gulch and the Swinging Bridge. Both of these spots include a light hike in, cool clear water and fun jumping spots.

Store Gulch

This swimming has been my favorite for years. It’s a hidden gem in Southern Oregon. The hike in is relatively short, but steep so it’s not super accessible for families with small children (don’t worry, most of the other spots are family friendly). This makes for a fairly peaceful environment which is easily why it ranks number one for me. I absolutely love laying a floaty partially in the water, closing my eyes and listening to some quiet music.

Swinging Bridge

The Swinging Bridge is actually one of the most dangerous swimming spots along the river as it has become a semi-popular jumping spot for daredevils. Depending on the water level, the bridge can be anywhere from 60-70 feet off the water. At this height, you have to hit the water close to perfect to not get injured. I personally have never jumped off of the bridge, but I have watched my boyfriend. He luckily was uninjured, but I have heard many horror stories of people breaking their neck or becoming temporarily paralyzed from landing wrong. The bridge is currently closed to the public, which really just means they put a sign up with no enforcement. Unfortunately, due to the remoteness of both the river and the one lane road it’s on it’s near impossible to be reached without a helicopter, so please take precaution.

This is not one of my favorite spots for multiple reasons, however, it’s a very popular spot to swim at as there is also an old fish ladder a bit further down that you can jump off of and float down to the bridge!
