atlas of essential work

Contribute Content

The Pacific Northwest Atlas of Essential Work was created to grow through contributions by researchers and students across disciplines. We invite contributors who study the experiences of essential workers and the ways that they shape the physical, cultural, and imaginary landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. We want to help you share and amplify projects which help to define the past, present, and potential futures of essential work in the region.

The work you have created can fit within the Atlas in different ways, depending on the type of content. If it is a digital project you are or will be already hosting, we can include it with a brief introduction and a link to your site. If it is text or graphic work, we may be able to host it directly on the Atlas site. We welcome work from faculty and community researchers, and individual students or full classes. (Note: sharing student work requires specific permissions that must be secured before inclusion; see FAQs.)

We have created a template for how your work may be presented when sharing your project with the Atlas.

FAQs

Who can contribute to the Pacific Northwest Atlas of Essential Work?

We welcome submissions from students and faculty at any of the Pacific Northwest Just Futures Institute partner institutions (Heritage University, University of Idaho, Whitman College), as well as from community groups in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, and Idaho).

What forms of content could I contribute?

  • Data visualizations
  • Maps (digital or image)
  • White papers or policy proposals
  • Scholarly articles (published, unpublished)
  • Interviews
  • Stories
  • Artwork
  • Oral histories
    • Written
    • Audio
    • Video
  • Visual stories
    • Videos/Films/Movies
    • Graphic narratives
    • Photo essays

Can I submit student work? What documentation do I need?

Yes! Students are welcome to submit their own work and faculty are welcome to submit work from their classes. Students do need to give permission to have their work shared. If you submit a proposal, using the “Submit Now” button above, we will send you the necessary forms from the Office of Vice President for Research and Innovation.

What types of media can I share? What permissions do I need for these media?

For submissions that will live on the Atlas site, we can accept text, images, and short video/audio clips. For submissions that we will link to, you can share whatever media works on your site. Submitters are responsible for securing and documenting permissions for any pre-created work, as well as securing permissions and documentation from human participants including, if necessary, IRB approval for human subjects research.

How much control will I have in how my work is presented?

Any work shared on or in connection to the Atlas of Essential Work will be created in collaboration with the submitter and the Atlas team. We are limited in the amount of design work we can do to present the work to either 1. a short introduction with link to an existing site or 2. text, visuals, and existing media that fit with the template structure.

How is it decided what content will be included?

The Atlas leadership team, with guidance from the JFI leadership team, will review all submissions for relevancy of the work to the Atlas, what it adds to or expands on the existing content, feasibility of integration within the Atlas, robustness of the work, and appropriate permissions acquired.
