Sun Chip’s Compostable Bag Commercial

After watching Sun Chip’s Compostable Bag commercial, I was left with an overwhelming feeling of frustration. How can a company, targeting the environmentally-friendly consumers have no respect for the environment themselves? The horrifying lack of respect towards the environment, clearly portrayed in this ad, saddens me greatly. This commercial is supposed to promote a greener opportunity for us consumers but ends up merely exemplifying an ignorant company trying to make money through exploiting our environment.

The commercial implies that by purchasing this compostable chip bag we are doing our part in protecting the environment, therefore we need not worry as to anything else- say for example, picking up all the trash we see on a day-to-day basis. Instead we can just hide that trash, ignoring the problem, and feel good about ourselves because we purchased a compostable bag of chips. The commercial ensures the consumer with a feeling of trust, implying that we should not worry about the condition of our environment for the compostable bag will eliminate all of our waste problems and secure a beautiful Earth for our children to enjoy.
After watching this commercial it is easy to see Sun Chips lack of concern for our planet. Sun Chip wants the consumers to do absolutely nothing about the current condition of our planet besides purchasing their product. No need to pick up the trash you see lying about, for if we pretend that it is not there, or better yet, cover it up with a giant picture of a landscape, it will not exist. This attitude is very detrimental to our environment. It doesn’t allow the consumers to take responsibility of their actions but actually encourages them to continue to consume without conscious of what our consuming is really doing to our poor planet.
In the commercial, as the actors are covering up their pieces of trash with giant pictures, the narrator tell us this, “if we all made a change it could lead to some pretty amazing things. And keep this world beautiful, so I can someday pass it on to my children.” I agree. I believe that we should do everything we can in keeping our planet beautiful so future generations will be able to enjoy just as we have, but in order to keep our planet beautiful we need to acknowledge the issues and try to fix them. Not cover them up and pretend that they don’t exist. There is no quick fix when it comes to creating a better future but purchasing a bag of chips, compostable or not, is not the solution to our environmental problems.
