11/6 Post Iran and its Violation of Human Rights: How is The World Reacting?

The Iranian government has been known for brutally persecuting minority groups that provoke its ire. These groups include women, LGBTQ+, ethnic, and religious minorities, who face increased risk of physical violence, unfair trial, torture, the death penalty, and so much more. Despite all this, fearless people have been rallying together to oppose the government.

Since the death of Mahsa Amini in September, Iranian citizens have continued to demand for the establishment of a political institution that recognizes their human rights.  They aren’t alone, well over 760,000 people around the globe are backing this call for change. Not only that, but these people are also calling for the UN to investigate Iran’s human rights violations.

So far, 10 UN experts called on the Human Rights Council to take the reins and establish an international investigative mechanism on Iran during a special session. Well over 43 human rights organizations are in support of this action. Additionally, Germany announced that it would advocate for convening a special session to establish a UN mechanism on Iran.

The establishment of a UN mechanism will mean that the cycle of violence in Iran will hopefully, come to an end. It is clear that the Iranian government and authorities will continue to violate human rights so as long as the rest of the world continues to look away from it.
