What’s happening in Ukraine?
Since February 2022, mounting tensions between Ukraine and Russia have severely escalated. The deployment of Russia’s military into Ukraine has led to a series of violent and damaging fighting within Ukraine, at the expense of the entire world. The motivation behind the attack is largely thought to be an attempt to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, though is claimed to be a war fought against Nazism. Ukraine has held its ground in the fight for solidarity, yet many citizens continue to take refuge in foreign nations. Regardless, this war has tremendously impacted the global supply chain and inflation across the globe.
How does this affect Bangladesh?
The Russian-Ukrainian war has had a tremendous impact on Bangladesh, most notably in the economic sector. Sanctions on trade with Russia have impacted the availability and cost of oil, especially in poorer countries such as Bangladesh. These effects on global trade have intensified the food insecurity that was already prevalent. Considering this information, the response from Bangladesh to this war can best be explained. Bangladesh has remained, for the most part, neutral to both sides, opting not to “burn bridges” with economic superpowers and to protect their safety. Thus, the West, East, and their neighbors remain peaceful with Bangladesh, leaving them in the most advantageous position possible.
