Updated: 5/19: Third Blog Post Assignment

From the syllabus: Course Blog: 20%: Throughout the term, you will contribute posts to our course blog (four posts of 500 – 750 words), and responses to your classmates’ posts (at least eight total comments: two for each time you post).

How to Blog

1. Navigate to the blog web address.
2. Click on “use my duck ID” to log into blog.
3. Type in UO email username and password and click “Login”
4. Under “my sites” on top left of screen click on the “ENG 110″ site
5. If necessary, go to “My Dashboard.”
6. On the left side, click “Posts,” then select “Add New.”
7. Type in a title for your blog in the first blank field under “Add New Post.”
8. Type in your post (or, to be safe, cut & paste from another word processing program). Notice that you can add links, images, video, sound, etc.
9. Before you publish your post, categorize it. On your dashboard, you should see a box titled “Categories.” Select your name under the category “First blog post” by checking it.
10. Click the blue “Publish” button on the right. You have the opportunity to go back and edit your post even after you have published it.

Here are three basic options for blog posts. You’re free to depart from this list, but this should give you an idea of what I’m looking for:

1). A close reading: Look closely at a scene from one of our films. You might write about one of its formal properties, like its mise-en-scene. You could talk about why you thought that scene was important to the overall meaning of the film. You might talk about how our perception of one particular character is developed in a particular scene. Lots of options here.

2). A personal response: What does this film make you think or feel? How does it connect to your own experiences? Show us the dialogue taking place between you and the filmmaker, and how you interpret and make meaning of the work. Make an argument for why the film did or didn’t resonate with you.

3). A connection: “This film (or the discussion from this week) makes me think of this other thing that is relevant to the course.” For example, in Week 7 we’ll talk about Through the Olive Trees, a film that responds to a natural disaster. You might talk about that film in relationship to another film about disaster, for example Spike Lee’s When the Levees Broke.

The main purposes of the course blog are to:

Respond to and reflect on the films as we watch and study them in class.
Practice our use of film terminology and the techniques of formal analysis of films.
Test out ideas for papers, exams, and other assignments and receive constructive feedback from the class.
Practice taking varied points of view on films and questioning our own assumptions.

Here are the basic rules of the course blog:

Write about material that is related in some way to our course readings or class discussions.
Proofread posts and comments before submitting them
Don’t plagiarize (or self-plagiarize). Hyperlink outside sources (if it was online) as well as anything else that adds to your post.
Don’t use fighting words or provoke anyone. Even though this is the internet, you should post and comment using the same courtesy and respect you would use in class discussion.
Stay within the word count requirements (500 – 750 words)
Post on time.

Suggestions for Your Posts:

Write with your audience in mind: consider your audience to be the other members of this class as well as other people who are interested in movies.
Be clear and concise. These are short posts, so keep your scope limited. Instead of trying to talk about an entire film, talk about one scene, one character, or one particular formal quality you noticed.
Share your opinions (but back them up with evidence from the films).
When appropriate, refer directly to particular scenes from the films that we are watching in class. This is a great forum for practicing close reading and analyzing particular scenes and sequences.
Ask questions and be open-ended – inspire the discussion.
Feel free to link appropriate video clips, images, etc.

Comments:

Should be at least 4-5 sentences in length (more is fine, less is not)
Respond to others thoughtfully and respectfully. Show the author that you read their post carefully with phrases like: “I hear you saying….” / “It seems to me that you are claiming …”
Read the comments posted before and after yours.
Support your comments with evidence from the films.
Suggested response prompts: Your post made me think about… I wonder why… This post is interesting to me because… I think your point is important because… Another thing I noticed in this scene was … I can relate to this… I don’t understand… I had a totally different response to this film because . . .
