Dziga Vertov’s Man With A Movie Camera is one of the oddest films that I have ever seen. I chose to write about this movie for the first blog because I thought is was an interesting story. The movie begins in a movie theater and is shot as if the movie theater is preparing itself for the people to watch a movie. The seats come down by themselves as the projector operator readies the film. This makes it seem as though Vertov wanted to represent the theater or film as being alive and an interactive part of human life. This movie was very hard to follow from the very beginning. It seemed to have no real rhyme or reason to it. About fifteen minutes in I found myself trying to find any meaning at all in any of the scenes that I saw. I noticed that there were quite a few scenes that depicted the camera as being alive. The lens is also depicted with an eye overlaid. This made me think that the director wanted to show the camera as having a life of its own. The stop motion parts of the film showed the camera moving itself around and setting itself up. I liked to think throughout the movie that the camera was looking out by itself and capturing all aspects of daily life in the city. It collected scenes from all walks of life from old people to young people. I didn’t really enjoy the movie. It was rather long and the shots didn’t seem to have anything to do with each other. After trying to find something to interpret for the entire length of the movie I couldn’t find anything. Perhaps that is what the movie is supposed to be. Maybe it’s not supposed to be interpreted. I recall that it isn’t supposed to have a story either, but I also think it is just a random film. I couldn’t tell what any of the movie meant other than for some reason the director wanted me to look at the camera as having a life of its own. I don’t think I would recommend this movie to many people. It seems like it has remained “popular” for so many years because no one else has quite figured it out either. Just because a film is different does not make it good. I feel like many people in the past have regarded the movie as ground breaking and innovative because they didn’t really get it. It is easy to label something, as being “new” because new doesn’t have to have a category. You don’t have to know what it meant as long as you can say it was different. I think that is an injustice done to future movie enthusiast by the critics of the past.

This post made me wish I wrote about “Man With A Movie Camera”. I resonated with a lot of what you highlighted. This film was sporadic, unconventional, and dull. It is hard to imagine that a collage of filming styles and revolutionary shots could turn out so disengaging but I believe that is due to the complete lack of narrative.
As you stated, there are moments that share similar themes. I found the introspective theme somewhat entertaining. Maybe Vertov was trying to comment on the film industry and what it is like to be the man behind the camera. However, even if that was his intent, the story line was lost.
Maybe Vertov’s ultimate statement is that filming is a chaotic experience. You never know what you are going to come up with. Shots come in all shapes and sizes. The creative process is something that cannot be distilled into a story. If not that, then I do not know what point he is trying to make here. The next side I would weigh to would be that the film itself is just a modernist art piece. Who knows…
I have to agree with BWiley on this one, this post really hit home with me. When thinking about what to write my blog about, “Man With a Movie Camera” was quickly ruled out simply because the film was so random with its shots. One reason I think it is so difficult for us to get a good grasp on this film is because of its unconventional style. I would bet for most of us almost every movie, if not every movie has a narrative. I felt that I was trying so hard to find the narrative that I lost focus on the film itself.
After thinking on the film for some time, I came to almost the same conclusion; that this film is not to be interpreted, it is simply for our visual enjoyment. As you noted there are numerous scenes depicting daily life in the city. Also, I too noticed the camera being alive and involved in some of the scenes. Connecting the dots, “Man with a Movie Camera,” is a visual representation of the chaotic events happening in a modern day city presented through the lens of a camera to show different perspectives.
Although regarded as a piece of “art,” this film was extremely difficult to focus on. It was rather dull and unentertaining in presenting a view of a modern chaotic city. It is hard to pinpoint the overall point/ideas of this story, but in my mind there must be a more effective way to present the ideas of this montage. This is innovative, but not everything that is new is successful. This movie had and still has some glory, but there is a reason we do not see too many movies like this.
I almost fell asleep watching this movie, but it had tons of great shots and editing pieces that can be very easily overlooked. It’s a movie that needs to be looked at for the pure aesthetics of filming and editing, going into the movie with that mindset might have made the film a bit easier to watch.
