We Shall Not Be Silent- PIELC

I attended the event called PIELC Changing Current on Thursday evening and a lot of people all over came to the conference. PIELC stands for public interest environmental law conference and was the 33rd annual meeting. Amy Goodman and Kathleen Dean Moore spoke at the ceremony. Amy Goodman gave a video message and talked about the extreme weathers. Changing currents is the title of the conference and wants to enforce a message about climate changes and how it plays a role. There are always weather reports that display extreme weathers and they should be linked with the word climate change. She talked about how people need to know that climate change plays a role in weather and how different places experience such highs and low temperature. I agree with her on the statement that people are in denial and don’t want to face that fact that global warming is happening.

Goodman wants the media to tell the truth about everything that is going on whether it is oil, war, or weather. She is a very passionate speaker about climate change and wants to make people aware of the issue and spread the word. Also, she talked about places all around the world that are trying to bring climate change to justice. She made me think about how much power the media has because the media can brainwash people on climate change. Fossil fuel industries have a lot of power but people have a chance to make a change and help with global warming. She explained how serious this issue is and how thankful she is that people have gathered together and are taking a stand. I would say it wasn’t a positive speech but it definitely was an informing message she had to share with everyone about climate change. Her last part of her message was “we shall not be silent” and that was a very powerful statement.

The next speaker, Kathleen Moore, was another inspirational speaker about climate change. She speaks around the world about global warming and is an author of the book, “It’s Wrong to Wreck the World.”  She is a philosopher and is passionate about the issue of climate change and wants to make a change. She talked about her trip to Alaska and was explaining how she was in the shade and the weather was 104 degrees. Moore explained how the temperatures are still increasing and it wasn’t cold at all in Alaska. She went there to think about global warming and the world is headed towards a dangerous place. A metaphor she talked about was that rivers go through obstacles but will always find a new way and keep going. No matter how bad climate change is we are going to work together to figure this out. She said pick your stone and throw it into the river, meaning get involved with climate changes and prepare yourself for the future. She asked the audience why does it matter and why should people care about climate change. The answer is climate change is a moral problem and calls for a moral response. The fact that people are too busy and don’t care is a sin, and they really should get involved with the impacts of global warming. I liked her comment that if we continue to act the way we do about the world then nothing will be done.

I enjoyed going to the PIELC event on campus and was very informing about climate change.

  1. This post was really informative since I did not attend the lecture, but I completely agree with your comment about how people are in denial of climate change and and don’t want to face the fact that global warming is happening. This statement is true because the majority of the time climate change is never a topic that people want to discuss on a daily basis. They try to avoid it as much as possible because it is not something that they like thinking about. I find this really interesting because it is something that people should care about and we need to show people that it is a topic that they should care about.
