Excessively buttered popcorn, leather recliner chairs, Red Vines and large slushies. What do all these things have in common? The movies! If you love/miss the movies half as much as I do then I have an event for you…Ducks After Dark! Every Thursday, the EMU hosts a series of educational activities, engaging UO traditions and screenings of the BEST movies known as Ducks After Dark.
Albert Heape is the social media coordinator for Ducks After Dark. When he started out last spring, he was looking forward to in-person events and a job that integrated two of his favorite things, social media and movies; however, circumstances quickly changed. Because of COVID-19, Albert and his team have had to make tremendous efforts to reshape and continue this program.
When Albert was younger, he used to rely on his favorite movies, Star Wars, Back to the Future and Indiana Jones, to get him through long family road trips. He knows firsthand the sanctuary and escape that movies can provide and loves that he gets to play a role in doing this for others. This is why he and his team have worked tirelessly to uphold safety regulations and continue the program, limiting occupancy and seating, requiring masks and constantly sanitizing equipment. They have also taken the initiative to provide online screenings for those not comfortable or able to make the events.
These changes have not kept Albert from getting the most out of his experience; Ducks After Dark has taught him the real-life challenges that come with the workforce. His involvement has been reassuring in his desire to work with a valued team, brands and people that are passionate about the same messages as he is.
