The main way I am connecting science and art in my project is based off a video made by Sony. The project was arranged by international advertising agency McCann and the photographer was Nick Meek. Their idea was to cover the area near the Irazú Volcano located in central Costa Rica with flower petals. Every flower petal represented one pixel in Sony’s 4K Ultra HD TV. They recruited the help of locals and they collected the most beautiful and vibrant colored petals in the area. It took them over two weeks and it resulted in 3.5 tons of petals.
I thought this was a perfect example of literally connecting volcanoes and flowers. The natural world is connecting in two ways that normally would not occur under natural reasons. In Sonys ad campaign they challenge many people idea behind volcanoes. Volcanoes are seen as destructive and intrusive. Normally they will cover a nearby city in ash but in this case the city was covered with technicolored petals. This city was brought beauty and these flowers grew into something more than flowers they became a vital part of Sonys campaign.
