Most of Kenya’s mothers languages have been dying off in the last few decades. The reason for this is that parents aren’t teaching their kids the mother language and are only teaching kids English. Kenya’s adults think English is a more common language and that it’ll be more beneficial for their kids now and in the future when they grow up and find jobs. The country of Kenya has 42 languages that are used in that country but about 16 of them are starting to disappear. These 16 languages are in serious risk of being lost and forgotten and that’s what makes learning new and endangered languages so important. With these languages the culture around them is also disappearing. A lot of people believe that a window into a new culture is through language and if those languages disappear so do the cultures that surround them. Some of these endangered cultures include Ogiek tribe , Elmolo tribe, Sengwer tribe , Yaaku tribe , and Waata tribe and many more in kenya and other eastern african countries. About 35% of African languages are in extreme danger of being forgotten by the next decade. For me I think It’s important that more people go out and learn multiple languages. It’s important that schools have more programs for kids to get involved in so that they can learn languages and other cultures. If more and more people learn these languages/cultures then maybe there wouldn’t be so many at risk.
