Description: Cascade Volcano Field Course is a 3-week summer course divided into asynchronous online portions, and a field portion. Week 1 and 3 are asynchronous online, and Week 2 takes place in the field.  The course focuses on the geology, geography, and human aspects of volcanoes, with an emphasis on field studies in the central Oregon Cascades and covers the physical processes that cause volcanic activity, and an introduction to geological science.

Week 1 & 3:  These portions of the course will take place asynchronous online in 2-week blocks (Monday through Sunday) immediately before and following the field trip portion. The online portion of the course can be completed anywhere, as long as students have reliable internet access. Students should expect to participate in online discussion topics and reflection assignments. During this portion of the course, writing assignments and related online class discussions should not exceed 3 hours/day. The final exam will be given online on the last day of the course (Friday). Preparation for the exam should be minimal if students have been keeping up with daily exercises and readings.

Week 2: This portion of the course will take place entirely in Bend, Oregon. The class will meet every day for 5 consecutive days (Monday through Friday), from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Daily field trips will depart from Oregon State University-Cascades campus in Bend.  Students should expect to attend all field trips during Week 2. During this portion of the course, students should not be enrolled in any other courses or have any other commitments outside of this course. Students should expect to contribute to class discussions and field trip activities every day, and will keep a detailed field notebook that will be turned in at the end of the course. Assigned readings outside of class time during Week 2 should not exceed 2 hours/day and problem sets and related exercises should occupy no more than 2 hours/day.

Transportation and lodging: The course fees cover all transportation, including round trip van transportation from the University of Oregon campus in Eugene to the Oregon State University-Cascades campus in Bend, van transportation for daily field trips departing from the Oregon State University-Cascades campus in Bend, and summer lift tickets for Mt.
