Meierjurgen Fellowship for Visiting Scientists

The Meierjurgen Fellowship provides the opportunity for faculty on sabbatical and visiting researchers from other universities and institutes to collaborate with those in the Department of Earth Sciences. The funded position provides a stipend for salary, travel, and/or living support for a term. Requirements for the fellowship are at least a term in residence and one lecture in the departmental seminar.

The Meierjurgen Visiting Fellowship is a bequest of a former student, Herman Peter Meierjurgen and his wife Carrie of Tillamook, Oregon. Born in Redfield, South Dakota, his family moved to Hillsboro before he came to University of Oregon, and graduated BSc, in 1928. “Pete” was Publicity Manager for the Condon Club during his senior year. He died in 1985 at the age of 83, after a long career as an Oregon civil servant, including Chairman of the Oregon State Fish (then Pacific Marine Fisheries) Commission from 1957-1967. Carrie died in 2001 at the age of 94.

The inaugural Meierjurgen Fellow was Tracy L. Vallier (USGS retired), who aided Becky Dorsey and Gene Humphreys in teaching a term-long “Blue Mountains Seminar”, and also led a memorable departmental field trip into Hells Canyon, including jet-boat forays.

Selection criteria for the fellowship include academic merit, collaborative ties with faculty, and likely use of departmental facilities or regional field areas. United States citizenship is not required. Doctoral degree in geology or related area required. Application consists of a one-page letter of intent indicating the desired term of residence and complete curriculum vitae.
