- Solid: The pith is the center or core of a branch or twig. A solid pith compact without any obvious spaces or gaps.
- Triangular: The shape of the darker center of the twig (the pith) is roughly triangular.
- Chambered: Although not very clear in this photograph, a chambered pith is recognizable by gaps or spaces being visible when looking at a cross section of a branch or twig.
