- Armed: Thorns, spines, or similar protective features protruding from the stem.
- Exfoliating bark: Bark that peels off, revealing younger, smoother bark.
- Ribbed, ridged, green stems: These stems to not roll easily between your fingers.
- Scrufy: Although we do not have a photo to represent this term, it is a common feature of some plants, such as Buffaloberry. Scurfy stems appear rough and somewhat flaky.
