- General characteristics:
The Western Red Cedar ranges in height from 150 to 200 feet high, with a diameter ranging from 3 to 10 feet. This tree has a pyrimidal crown that is not very dense.
- Branches:
Leaves are scale-like and decussate. The internodes are approximately as long as they are wide. The branches occur in flat sprays.
- Stomatal bloom:
On the underside of the flat spray, the Western Red Cedar has a pattern of stomatal bloom that resembles a butterfly or bow-tie.
- Cones:
The cones of the Western Red Cedar are small, round and semi-woody.
