Pinus ponderosa
- General appearance:
Ponderosa Pines are well known for their bark which smells like vanilla. The bark also has a distictive appearance as it tends to flake off in puzzle shaped pieces. These trees tend to grow in drier sites and at a wide range of elevations.
- Branch:
The Ponderosa branches appear bushy, particularly at the ends of the twig.
- Needle bundles:
Needles occur in bundles of THREE.
- Cones:
Ponderosa cones are larger than Lodgepole cones and have a sharp, stiff prickle on each cone scale.
