Vine Maple

Acer circinatum

leaves

  • Characteristics:
The Vine Maple usually grows up to 20′ tall, yet occasionally it can grow to be a small tree measuring up to 30′ or 40′ tall. The branches of the Vine Maple can at times appear chaotic and disogranized. The leaves are alternately arranged and palmately veined (for veination, see below). The outline of the leaf is circular, yet the leaves have serrated, fan-like lobes on the margins. The leaves are less than 5″ in diameter. The fruit is a double samara, like that of the Big Leaf Maple, yet the wings of the samara are connected at a wider angle (approximately 90 degrees).

  • Palmately Veined:
This photo is a close-up of the palmate veination of a Vine Maple leaf. Notice how all veins originate from one common point at the base of the leaf.
