What is Design Camp?

UO Design Camp is a summer program offered by the College of Design at the University of Oregon in Portland. We are located in the historic White Stag Block in the Old Town neighborhood in downtown Portland.

At UO Design Camp, students will engage in thoughtful creative conversations, hands-on design exercises, and field trips to meet professional architects and designers. Join us and discover your creative calling and your place within Portland’s vivid design community.

Camp Overview

Be a designer. At the UO Design Camp, you will gain an understanding of the disciplines you are interested in pursuing through exposure to working professionals and the tools and techniques of the trade. You will have the opportunity to dig deeper into the three disciplines and to make your ideas reality with a hands-on studio project. You will take part in discussions and design reviews, and make friends that will enhance your understanding and help inform your personal aesthetic.

Meet great people. You will get to know local design professionals and visit their firms. You will see award-winning sustainable urban design—here in the city of Portland. Our instructors will open your mind to new ideas and new ways of working in architecture, art, and design.  At Design Camp, you will be a part of thoughtful design conversations, hands-on design exercises, and field trips. You will gain an understanding of the disciplines you are interested in pursuing through exposure to the tools and techniques of the trade.

Our instructors. Our UO Design Camp instructors are all working professionals in their field, as well as being instructors and alumni of the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts. They are passionate about bringing their professional practice to the classroom to introduce the next generation of designers the rewards, challenges, and joys of a creative career.

Schedule and Cost. Classes meet from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cost includes a tee shirt, lunches, and snacks. Cost does not include housing, additional meals, parking, or transportation to and from the school. Please note that student housing is not provided — students must make their own housing arrangements. The White Stag Block is easily accessible via Portland’s public transportation system.

University of Oregon College of Design in Portland

The College of Design offers degree programs in Eugene and Portland. The Department of Architecture offers the master’s of architecture degree (MArch) and the fifth year of study for undergraduate students enrolled in the bachelor of architecture degree (BArch) program.  The Historic Preservation Program offers a master of science (MS) in historic preservation. The Sports Product Design program offers a master of science (MS) in sports product design, and the Department of Product Design offers undergraduate students a fifth year of study Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA).

These programs at the University of Oregon in Portland connect in multiple ways with the city and the metropolitan area through teaching, research, creative work, and service activities. Portland is an extraordinary urban laboratory for the University of Oregon and the college’s engaged and active students and faculty members.
