Winter Term 2020 Welcome Message

Message from the Office of the Dean
January 7, 2020

Welcome to winter term 2020!

I hope you all had a restorative and enjoyable winter break.

As classes get underway, we have much to look forward to this term.

Susan Dolan, MLA ’96, director of Cultural Landscapes for the National Park Service, is this year’s distinguished Lawrence Medalist. The Lawrence Medal is a wonderful College-wide recognition of an alum doing impactful work. Bringing the medalist to campus during the academic year will allow for greater engagement with faculty and students. Mark your calendar for Dolan’s lecture on Thursday January 30, at 4:15 in 115 Lawrence. The lecture will be followed by the presentation of the award and a reception.

We have three tenure-track searches underway this term, a Mass Timber Design position in Architecture, a New Media & Feminist Discourse position in Art, and a Chinese Art and Architectural Historian position. We look forward to the finalists’ campus visits and the opportunity to recruit outstanding new colleagues.

Our Dean search is live with an application deadline of February 15. Proactive recruitment will be essential to the success of the search. Please help distribute the posting through your professional networks and encourage promising candidates to apply.

Our winter term College of Design faculty/staff meeting will be Tuesday, February 18, at 4:00 p.m. in the Hayden Gallery. I look forward to this next opportunity for us to gather as a whole community around topics of shared interest.

The quarter system always feels like a speeding train, especially winter.
Let’s make the most of it.

Best,

Laura Vandenburgh
Interim Dean, College of Design
