The following document outlines the criteria and process for the assignment of tenure-track faculty to College of Design Portland-based programs, and was shared with tenure-track faculty in January 2018.

As part of creating the criteria and processes to describe how eligibility is determined to hold a Portland-based faculty assignment, the Dean’s office invited faculty to provide their feedback on the working draft of the criteria document. Below is a PDF of the comments that were received.

Below are PDFs of two documents created at the request of the Provost for presentation at the Fall 2017 Academic Leadership Team retreat held on August 29-30 at the Erb Memorial Union. The “College of Design 2020” vision statement is a draft document that remains open to input from the college community.

AY 16-17

Throughout fall 2016, faculty and staff explored the idea of restructuring through a series of work sessions and surveys. Informed by feedback from those, Dean Lindner tasked a college strategy working group composed of tenure track and non-tenure track faculty from all departments and programs with compiling faculty and staff input and developing several frameworks for possible restructuring.

The working group’s report was shared with all faculty and staff, who provided feedback to their unit heads. Dean Lindner also brought the proposal to students through an open forum and feedback-gathering period. Informed by that feedback, the dean, associate deans, and department and program heads unanimously decided to proceed with the proposal to transition the School of Architecture & Allied Arts to the College of Design.

In January 2017, the then School of Architecture and Allied Arts, led by Dean Christoph Lindner, made a proposal to UO Provost Scott Coltrane to restructure the school as a college composed of three schools and one independent department. On April 14, 2017, the University of Oregon approved the School of Architecture and Allied Arts’ proposal to become the College of Design.

Our entire academic community, including our faculty, staff, current students, and alumni provided valuable input in the development of the college. Department and program faculties generated the school names by consensus within each school. The College of Design name emerged from naming parties, a faculty survey, and extended discussion with school leadership.

The College of Design name and new school names went into use officially on July 1, 2017.
