Message from the Office of the Dean
November 25, 2019

Dear College of Design Faculty and Staff:

I am pleased to announce that Akiko Walley, Maude I. Kerns Associate Professor of Japanese Art, has accepted the position of Department Head of the History of Art and Architecture for a three-year term beginning in Spring 2020. With a clear vision and commitment to the future of the department, Professor Walley will be an able leader, building on the department’s momentum to advance its programs.

Walley received a PhD in Art History from Harvard University, specializing in Japanese Buddhist art. She joined the University of Oregon in 2009. Walley has served as the Director of the Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies since 2018.

Through the end of Winter term, Keith EggenerMarion D. Ross Distinguished Professor of Architectural History, will be the acting Department Head, sharing leadership responsibilities with Professor Walley, who will act as Associate Head. Professor Eggener’s knowledge and prior experience in the role will allow for continuity in administration and enable Professor Walley to transition into the leadership role.

The Department of the History of Art and Architecture requests that all communications to the department head be sent to the department head email address: arthistorydepthead@uoregon.edu.

I appreciate the department’s thoughtful participation in this head transition process, particularly given the quick turnaround.

Please join me in thanking Akiko Walley and Keith Eggener for taking on this critical leadership work.

Sincerely,

Laura Vandenburgh
Interim Dean, College of Design
