April 29th, 2016: Exploring Accounting With Moss Adams

During this class we had the pleasure to get to hear about public accounting from Moss Adams. Moss Adams is a company made out of accountants, tax, and consulting services. They spoke to us about careers in public accounting. Tito Garcia is Tax Senior in the Portland offices and Silke Olsen who is the firms Campus Recruiting Leader who works in the national offices in Seattle. Tito started off by telling us about his educational background. He attended OSU and interned with Moss Adams and fell in love with the working environment and what opportunities the company had to offered. Silke interned with the government when she was in college, she was having a hard time deciding whether she wanted to go into public or private practice and this gave her an opportunity to see what she was interested in. Both agree interning doing what might interest us is one of the biggest resources we could use. It helped both of them decide what they wanted to do after college.

From there they continued to explain to us what could be done with a career in public accounting. Working in public accounting can vary from many different things, the most common one is taxes. This is the usual tax return everyone does every year, Moss Adams focuses on doing tax returns for big companies that they are partners with. This is what Tito specializes in, he does tax returns and as a senior tax employee he also looks over other tax returns that have been done to make sure there is no errors and everything goes smoothly. Tito provides help and guidance to the other employees. This environment is what he loved, everyone is so approachable and everyone is like a big family but yet there is a level of professionalism Moss Adams follows. With this environment, they said everyone enjoys what they do.

Listening to Moss Adams employees talk about accounting so passionately seems like an interesting career. They love what they do and I want to be able to find that with my own career. Still being early in my college career I would love to intern with a company, while I have not gotten the opportunity to intern somewhere I have been given the opportunity to job shadow an employee with in a company. I couldn’t be any more excited because it is focusing on marketing and that is what interest me as of now. I hope one day I will fine a company to work with and be able to feel the same passion as the Moss Adams employees.
