03/2020 — On Friday, March 28, 2019, the 2019 AWP Conference held in Portland OR hosted a panel “To my silence, years long: A Tribute to Garrett Hongo.
As a poet, memoirist, essayist, editor, and teacher, Garrett Hongo has been instrumental in transforming the landscape of American literature over the last four decades. Since 1990, Hongo has taught in the University of Oregon’s MFA program, where has mentored countless students and provided a much-needed critical voice.” The panel brought together five of his former students to discuss his work, teaching, and legacy.
Sentiments expressed were collected and are posted on Poetry Northwest’s website along with an interview by Mark Jarman and new poem from Professor Hongo. To read more, visit: https://www.poetrynw.org/garrett-hongo-a-tribute
