9/22/23 Friendly Hall Steam Testing and Steam Status Advisory

9/28/23 Huestis Hall Condensate Return Line Shutdown

Due to a material delay, this shutdown will occur on Thursday, September 28.

Building(s) or Area(s) Affected:  Huestis Hall Basement

Scope:  As part of the Huestis Renovation project, condensate return unit (CRU-2) will be offline and removed. Existing condensate piping will be rerouted through the new CRU-1 unit.

Services Impacted:

  • The following equipment will be shut down – AHU 1&2, HWP 1&2, EF 1&2 and LEF 1&2.
  • Exhaust, fume hoods, HVAC, heating water, and steam condensate will be affected.
  • Steam Sterilizers will also be offline.

Special Instructions:  Fume hood sashes should be closed and containers within the fume hoods sealed prior to this date.

Scope:  Due to the installation of a new steam flow meter, the 4-inch steam main will be shut down.

Services Impacted:

  • This work should have little to no impact on most building users.
  • The Special Collections area humidity control system will be monitored and returned to normal operation on 9/14.
  • The 8-inch steam main will remain active at all times.
  • Work will take place in the utility tunnel.

Scope:  Starting the week of May 8th, the Mechanical shop will again implement its process for systematically deactivating the heat within steam-controlled buildings. This process can take several days depending on if any problems arise during this time.

Additional Notes:  Turning on and off the steam is very hard on the infrastructure serving our building’s mechanical systems.  Seasonal adjustments are based on the following format:

Steam is turned on in the Fall when:

  • Night-time outside air temperature is below 50 degrees for five consecutive nights
  • AND daytime temperatures are below 70 degrees for five consecutive days

Steam is turned off in the Spring when:

  • Night-time outside air temperatures are above 50 degrees for five consecutive nights
  • AND the daytime temperature is above 70 degrees for five consecutive days
