Art, Games, and Technology Research

After reading “Computer Graphics: Effects of Origins” by Beverly Jones the main thesis that is stated is the following: “New forms of art and technology are frequently cast in the mode of old forms, just as aspects of material and symbolic culture have been. Only when these new forms become available to the larger population can they affect cultural patterns of maintenance and change” (Jones, 21). Technology is continually growing and continues to get larger and larger, however Jones is saying that regardless of how fast technology changes, or grows, the basic components of technology remain the same.

“It was proposed that small computer systems similar to the larger systems used by Mallary for sculptures, by Laurie for weavings and by others for prints be used by individuals to create unique furniture, fabrics and prints suited to their special requirements” (Jones, 23).To me this historical example is showing how many things can be created and accomplished by technology. This supports Jones these due to the fact that the basic components of technology remain the same, however technology will always change to create something new or different. Techniques that were once used will still play into what is being created, but it will be created in a different way, through technology.

A great example of how Jones thesis in today’s culture is shown in numerous ways. The example I have found interest in is clothing/shoe design. For example, many years ago when creating a tennis shoe an artist would sketch the shoe out and then create the piece by going off of the image that was created. However, nowadays an artist can digitally design the clothing or shoe on the computer. For example Nike ID allows a viewer to design his or her own custom tennis shoe without having to sketch it on paper. “Design-it-yourself platforms are making it fun and easy to co-create product because of high usability and rich product visualization” (New York Times, Wong). The rich coloring of the design make it more appealing to the customer, to create this a designer had to sketch out what the final project looked like on paper. Once again the basic components come into play regardless of how advanced the technology may be. This goes hand in hand with this weeks reading, technology The basic components of sketching will still be used, but the technology of the computer will be able to enhance the item and make it will continue to grow, but the basic components will remain the same. From personal experience of working for Nike I understand and have seen the components of how technology has been used to strengthen the overall affect of their company. Although, the basic uses of technology are still in use and always will be.
